"Had We Landed A Few Meters Back, One Of The Legs Of The LM would have Been In That Crater! Charlie Duke Apollo 16 LMP"
Apollo 16 5 O'clock Pan 29x10 inch. Duke has added, "Had We Landed A Few Meters Back, One Of The Legs Of The LM would have Been In That Crater! Charlie Duke Apollo 16 LMP"
This pan was captured by Charlie Duke from the 5 O'clock postion relative to the LM. In our book Apollo: The Panoramas, Charlie describes this pan as follows: “The crater to the left of the LM was not seen during our landing approach due to the lunar dust being blown away by our descent engine. Had we landed a few meters back, one of the legs of the LM would have been in that crater causing a tilt to the rear instead of the level attitude we achieved. Had we been on a tilt it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, for me to offload the ALSEP from Quad 4.”
Hand signed by Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke, in silver ink on a high quality photographic print.
