This Sterling Silver 1.4" (35mm) diameter Apollo 15 Robbins Medallion has a fascinating history, although unflown, it contains a large amount Flown to the Moon Silver from a 2.2 lb Silver ingot recovered from the Spanish 'Plate Fleet' that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1716 off the Florida coast. The Silver Ingot was carried to the moon by Al Worden then melted down and mixed with the silver from 176 unflown Robbins Medallions which were originally intended to fly on Apollo 15 but did not, due to weight restrictions. During this re-strike a spelling mistake of the word 'Apennines' was corrected.
It has been estimated that as the silver ingot weighed 2.2 lbs, and was mixed with the unflown silver to mint 176 new medallions that each of these 'unflown' medallions contains approximately 20% flown silver by weight. A huge amount compared to other souvenir coins that contain flown metal.
The medallion is in exceptional condition and comes in its original snap case numbered 206
Comes with Al Worden hand signed COA
